CitationSniper — Privacy Policy

CitationSniper ("the Extension") is a Chrome browser extension that helps users find academic citations for text they select on webpages or PDFs. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how it's handled.

1. What we collect

• Account information: your email address and password, used to create and authenticate your account via Supabase.
• Selected text: the specific text you highlight and submit for citation search. We do not read or collect any other content from pages you visit.
• Search activity: a daily count of searches performed, used solely to enforce free-plan usage limits.
• Saved citations: if you save citations to your library (Pro feature), we store those citation records against your account.
• Payment information: we never see or store your card or mobile money details. Payments are processed entirely by Paystack, a licensed third-party payment processor. We only receive confirmation that a payment succeeded, along with the amount and plan purchased.

2. How we use your data

• To authenticate you and maintain your session.
• To send your selected text to our AI provider (Groq) for claim analysis, and to academic databases (Semantic Scholar, CrossRef, OpenAlex, Europe PMC, CORE) to find supporting citations.
• To enforce daily search limits on the free plan and unlock unlimited access for Pro subscribers.
• To activate and manage your subscription status after payment.

3. What we don't do

• We do not track your general browsing activity.
• We do not sell or share your personal data with advertisers.
• We do not read page content beyond the text you explicitly select and submit.

4. Third-party services

CitationSniper relies on the following third parties to operate:

• Supabase — authentication, database, and backend hosting.
• Groq — AI-based claim analysis of the text you submit.
• Semantic Scholar, CrossRef, OpenAlex, Europe PMC, CORE — public academic search APIs used to find citations.
• Paystack — payment processing for Pro subscriptions.

Each of these providers has its own privacy policy governing data they process on our behalf.

5. Data storage and security

Your account data is stored on Supabase's infrastructure. Session tokens are stored locally in your browser via Chrome's extension storage and are not accessible to other websites or extensions.

6. Data retention and deletion

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. To request deletion of your account and associated data, contact us at the email below.

7. Children's privacy

CitationSniper is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
